The ABCDs are four practices that carry the Ladder into daily life. They are not personality types or a test of worth. Each asks for a concrete response to the situation before us.
Acceptance
Receive reality honestly: what has happened, what you feel, what is within your reach, and what is not. Acceptance does not mean approving harm or abandoning change. It gives change a truthful starting point and expresses Grace.
Betterment
Choose a good next step without demanding a guarantee. A small repair, a useful habit, a request for help, or a responsible boundary can move life forward. Betterment expresses Faith as action amid uncertainty.
Compassion
See yourself and others clearly enough to care. Compassion includes truthful accountability; it does not require excusing abuse, restoring unsafe contact, or pretending consequences do not matter. It brings Truth into relationship.
Discipline
Give care a form that can endure: a realistic rhythm, a kept commitment, rest, restraint, and repeated practice. Discipline supports Peace through sustainable responsibility rather than punishment.
A practice for today
Name one fact you must accept, one improvement you can make, one person whose perspective you need to consider, and one commitment you can sustain. Let those four answers shape one modest action.
